Volunteer Roles

We need volunteers in order to run our program effectively and grow!   For the 2024 season, we have 230 cheerleaders on 19 squads!  We have 19 parent-coaches and over 50 high school cheerleaders who volunteer.  We have 3 division commissioners who help oversee part of the program. We have 2 directors who run the program.

A description of each role is below.

Squad Coaches

Each squad has between 10 - 15 girls on it.

You would be responsible for:

SAFETY:
  • Take attendance at each practice
  • Help your cheerleaders connect with their parents at the end of practice or if they need to use the restroom
  • Assist in any basic first aid (ex: band-aids) with your program-provided mini first aid kid.  Notify commissioner or directors if additional first aid (ex: ice packs, bandages, gloves, etc) is needed or call 911.

GUIDANCE:
  • While the UAHS Cheerleaders teach the youth cheerleaders the content, jumps and motions, you will guide them on working with children.  Help the youth cheerleaders use respectful behavior with the high school volunteers.
  • Be the first point of contact with parents

MOTIVATION & TEAMWORK:
  • Encourage cheerleaders to develop confidence, perseverance, and a positive attitude.
  • Act as a role model and mentor
  • Foster a sense of unity and teamwork by doing team-building activities and encouraging a supportive team culture.

All coaches are required to complete USA Cheer's Youth Coach certification course and background check.  This is reimbursed by Upper Arlington Youth Cheerleading.

Division Commissioners

.A commissioner's role would be to be the director's helpers, but also the point of contact for your assigned squads.   Each commissioner helps with:

LOGISTICS:
  • Arrive 20 minutes early to practice to get a good parking spot and set up your squad's area.
  • Put out the yard-signs to mark where your 4 squads go and turning on the rolling speaker with microphone. Getting the practice plans to each coach (This is emailed out it each week to all coaching staff and bring a hard copy to practice. You'd get it from the directors to give to your coaches.)
  • Assist directors with logistics for practice, Youth Night or games
GUIDANCE & MENTORSHIP:
  • Be a support of guidance and mentorship to your division's coaches to help them develop coaching skills and feel appreciated by the program.
  • Help your coaches connect together and with you to create good relationships.
  • If they are running late, they'd contact you first. You'd fill in until they get there.
  • If they are going to be absent, they will be asking the parents on their squad to fill in.  You'd probably need to give a little extra support to that fill-in person that day to make them feel comfortable.
  • Help oversee the UAHS cheerleaders assigned to your squads.
PROBLEM SOLVING:
  • Be an intermediary to get messages back to forth between coaches to directors.
  • You'd be a point of contact for parents too.  If they have a question or something to discuss, you'd field it first.  If it's something you need to run up the flag pole to the directors, you'd connect them.
  • Report issues with cheerleaders, families, coaches, UAHS cheerleaders, whoever to the directors.
SAFETY
  • Keep an extra set of the emergency contact for all of the girls in your division.
  • Access the full emergency first aid kits in the director carts if needed.  Each coach will have a mini-kit.
During the practice/game, you'd be able to watch your cheerleader and be near their squad for a huge bulk of the time unless an issue pops up or we need help carrying equipment (ex: getting uniform bags to the right squad).

All commissioners are required to complete USA Cheer's Youth Coach certification course and background check.  This is reimbursed by Upper Arlington Youth Cheerleading.
